New Republic

A state that grew out of the Rebel Alliance after the victory at Endor. It revived the Galactic Senate and declared itself the successor of the former Republic; its first capital was Chandrila, and afterward the capital world changed according to the results of elections.

The New Republic carried the war against the Empire through to its end, defeating its forces at Jakku, after which a peace treaty was signed that limited the Imperial armed forces. Seeking not to repeat past mistakes, it sharply reduced its own fleet and transferred a significant share of military powers to the planets.

This caution turned into weakness: the Senate did not take seriously the reports of the First Order threat, and Leia Organa had to create the Resistance outside state structures. The capital Hosnian system was destroyed by a shot from Starkiller Base, which put an end to Republic rule.
