Bakura joins the new rebel government
After the defeat of the Ssi-ruuk and the liberation of the planet, the government of Bakura joined the union that had succeeded the Alliance. To deter further invasions, a task force was sent to the Ssi-ruuk star cluster. The Alliance itself was soon reorganized into the Alliance of Free Planets, the forerunner of the New Republic.
Description
Shortly after the Battle of Endor, the Alliance intercepted an Imperial drone messenger carrying a call for help sent by Wilek Nereus, governor of the frontier planet Bakura: the planet had come under attack by the reptilian Ssi-ruuk, who turned sentient beings into a power source for their war machines. The Empire, having lost its Emperor, was unable to provide assistance. The Alliance dispatched forces to Bakura led by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa. The Imperial garrison, on the verge of defeat, agreed to a temporary truce and joint action, although the governor did not abandon his intention of dealing with the allies at the first convenient opportunity. After heavy fighting in the system and on the surface, the Ssi-ruuk invasion was repelled, and the Imperial administration lost the support of the local population and was removed. The liberated planet joined the union that became the Alliance's successor. Bakura's accession was one of the first cases in which a world previously governed by the Empire voluntarily went over to the new government, and it confirmed that after the Emperor's death, Imperial authority on the periphery was disintegrating.
