Battle of Bakura and the truce with the Empire
Shortly after Endor, the Alliance intercepted an Imperial probe carrying a call for help from Bakura's governor Wilek Nereus, whose planet was under attack by the reptilian Ssi-ruuk. The rebels and the Imperial garrison concluded a temporary truce and together repelled the invasion, after which Nereus broke the agreement and attacked his allies. His death, an uprising of the Bakurans, and the defection of commander Pter Thanas to the Alliance led to the surrender of the Imperial garrison.
Description
Shortly after Endor, the Alliance intercepted an Imperial probe carrying a call for help: Bakura's governor, Wilek Nereus, reported an invasion by an unknown enemy, demanded reinforcements, and admitted the loss of half of his defense forces. The attackers turned out to be the Ssi-ruuk, whose technology allowed them to transfer the minds of sentient beings into machines. The rebels decided to intervene, and the two sides concluded a temporary truce. Luke Skywalker and the Imperial commander Pter Thanas managed to organize a joint defense: the repair facilities of the spaceport and the orbital platform serviced ships of both sides, and calculations showed that losses would be lower if the key positions were taken by the stronger rebel fighters. Nereus signed the truce only after he had made sure of the Emperor's death and the absence of reinforcements, and at the same time he covertly set the local inhabitants against the allies. After the invasion was repelled, the Imperials attacked their recent allies and destroyed several ships. They failed to regain control of the system: the Bakuran resistance rose up, and Thanas went over to the Alliance. Nereus was killed, the garrison capitulated and was transported to neutral territory, and Bakura's government joined the New Republic.
