Restoration of the New Republic Senate

The New Republic Senate continued the line of the Galactic Senate of the Old Republic, which under the Empire had been turned into the advisory Imperial Senate and dissolved shortly before the Battle of Yavin. After Endor, the Alliance to Restore the Republic re-created the assembly as the main organ of government; in the early period it was called the Provisional Senate. Mon Mothma became the first Chancellor. At her insistence, the emergency powers once granted to Palpatine during the Clone Wars were repealed, and after the signing of the Galactic Concordance, which ended the Galactic Civil War, the Senate carried out a large-scale reduction of the armed forces. The capital was not fixed to a single world: the seat of the assembly moved from planet to planet, and in later years Hosnian Prime became the center. The assembly split into Centrists, who demanded a strong central government and army, and Populists, who defended the rights of planets. This split paralyzed the Senate's work and prevented it from recognizing the threat of the First Order; the destruction of the Hosnian system by the Starkiller weapon ended the existence of the legislature.
