Return of the Darksaber

c. 9 ABYApproximate dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

The symbol of authority over Mandalore was once again in the hands of an heir recognized by the clans.

Description

The Darksaber, a black blade of ancient make, served the Mandalorians as a sign of the right to rule: by custom it was not to be handed over but won in a duel. Bo-Katan Kryze of House Kryze had already held it after the civil war on Mandalore, but lost it together with her position as ruler when, during the Great Purge, she surrendered the weapon to Moff Gideon in exchange for a promise to spare the survivors, a promise the Imperial broke. The blade returned to the Mandalorians in a way other than custom prescribed: in a fight aboard Gideon's cruiser it was taken by Din Djarin, who had not sought the title. The formality of the rite was observed later, when Djarin, captured during the fighting on Mandalore, declared that he had been defeated and recognized Kryze's right to the weapon. The return of the blade gave Kryze what she had previously lacked: the agreement of the scattered clans, including the closed community of Death Watch and surviving combat groups, to recognize a single leadership on the eve of the campaign to reclaim their homeworld.
