Grand Army of the Republic

The armed forces of the Galactic Republic, created from clone soldiers. The clones were grown on Kamino from the genetic material of Jango Fett, with their growth accelerated and military training given to them from birth.

The army was secretly ordered without the Senate's knowledge and handed over to the Republic at the start of the Clone Wars; its first deployment came at the Battle of Geonosis. Formations were divided into legions, regiments, and companies, and also included special units such as commandos and scouts. Overall leadership was exercised by the command on Coruscant, and units were headed by Jedi generals, under whom clone commanders served.

A control chip was implanted in the brain of every clone, ensuring the execution of Order 66: the soldiers turned against their Jedi commanders. After the war the army became the foundation of the Imperial armed forces, and the clones were gradually replaced by conscripted stormtroopers.
