Tatooine

Tatooine orbits a binary star, which has turned its surface into an unbroken desert with salt flats and canyons. Water is extracted by moisture vaporators, and settlers live in scattered farmsteads and port towns, among them Mos Eisley and Mos Espa.

Formally the planet lies outside the Republic's effective control: affairs here were run by the Hutts, who controlled the underground trade, slavery, and podracing. Tusken Raiders roam the wastelands, along with Jawas, who collect and resell technology.

The fates of several generations of Skywalkers are tied to Tatooine: here Anakin Skywalker spent his childhood in slavery, and later Luke Skywalker grew up on his relatives' farm until he left the planet together with droids carrying stolen data.
