Interception of the diplomatic ship

The stolen plans for the Imperial battle station were carried off Scarif and, at the last moment, handed over to the diplomatic ship Tantive IV, registered to the House of Organa of Alderaan. The ship was listed as being on consular service, which until then had protected it from inspection, but the Imperial fleet had been in pursuit ever since the battle. A Star Destroyer overtook the vessel near Tatooine, damaged its engines, and pulled it in with a tractor beam. A stormtrooper boarding party overcame the resistance of the small shipboard security force; the crew suffered heavy losses. Appeals to diplomatic status and a peaceful mission were rejected: the Imperial command declared that the ship had been spotted during the battle and was holding the stolen documents. By that point the plans had been loaded into the memory of a droid sent down to the planet's surface in an escape pod, so the search of the ship yielded nothing. Senator Leia Organa was taken into custody, and the attack on a consular ship became an open sign that the Empire no longer considered itself bound by former legal constraints.
