Jakku

Jakku is a desert planet on the far fringe of the galaxy, with seas of sand, rocky ridges, and sparse settlements. The economy here rests on salvaging scrap metal: what is recovered is turned over to junk dealers in exchange for rations, and the settlement of Niima Outpost grew up around this trade.

The reason for the abundance of wreckage is a battle in which the New Republic routed the remnants of the Imperial fleet: crippled Star Destroyers and transports crashed onto the planet and remained lying in the sands. The wreckage was gradually buried by dunes, forming an entire graveyard of ships.

Decades later a droid carrying part of a map showing the whereabouts of a missing Jedi hid on Jakku. From here, too, a scavenger who had grown up among the wreckage left the planet, having spent many years waiting for the return of the family that had left her behind.
