Empire abandons the clone army
Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.
Clones were replaced by recruited soldiers: conscription was cheaper and did not depend on a single planet.
Description
The clone army was created on commission from the Republic and grown on Kamino to a single template. Such an army was reliable and well trained, but extremely expensive: each soldier required long years of growth and training, and all production was concentrated on a single planet, which made the Empire dependent on the Kaminoans and their terms. With the end of the war, the Empire began a gradual replacement: alongside the clones there appeared enlisted units made up of volunteers and conscripts from many worlds. Training such soldiers took months rather than years, cost incomparably less, and made it possible to replenish the ranks in any sector. At the same time, the clones' length of service was cut: they were transferred to secondary tasks, retired, or decommissioned, and accelerated aging cut their service short. By the end of the transition period, the Imperial armed forces consisted mainly of enlisted stormtroopers. Abandoning the clones made the army cheaper and freed it from dependence on Kamino, but lowered the level of training of the rank and file, which later told in clashes with trained rebel units.
