Deployment of the Imperial fleet

The Republic fought the Clone Wars with a fleet assembled in haste and designed for specific campaigns. The new regime needed a different instrument: not a means of winning a war, but a permanent presence ensuring the obedience of thousands of systems without conducting combat operations. The basis of this policy became a large naval formation capable of single-handedly suppressing any planetary defense. The military shipyards, above all the forges of Kuat, were switched to mass production of a new type of Star Destroyer, ships more than one and a half kilometers long carrying starfighters, walkers, and landing troops. Production was accompanied by the expansion of the network of shipyards, garrisons, and fuel depots, as well as by the subordination of civilian industry to military contracts. The deployment of the fleet made it possible to assign each sector its own forces headed by a Moff and turned the threat of orbital bombardment into an everyday argument of Imperial governance. At the same time, the reliance on large ships created a vulnerability that was later exploited by the resistance, which operated with small, fast units.
