Destruction of the cloning facilities on Kamino

c. 19 BBYApproximate dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

The Empire destroyed the facilities where the army had been grown, abandoning clones in favor of recruited soldiers.

Description

Kamino supplied the Republic with soldiers throughout the Clone Wars, and the Kaminoans expected to retain this position under the new regime. The Empire, however, saw the clones as a legacy of the previous era: they were expensive to produce, required long growth periods, and made the army dependent on a single planet, and they also remained loyal to relationships formed under the Republic. Having decided to switch to recruiting soldiers, the Imperial command did not stop at canceling orders. Equipment, samples, and some of the specialists were removed, after which the Imperial fleet bombarded Tipoca City and other complexes: the structures on stilts collapsed into the ocean together with laboratories and storage facilities. Some clones and Kaminoans were trapped inside the collapsing buildings, and some of them were taken away by the Empire for further experiments. The destruction of the cloning facilities deprived Kamino of its only industry and left the planet devastated. For the Empire, this meant a final break with the clone army and a shift to recruitment and conscription; for the clones themselves, it meant gradual discharge from service and the loss of their status.
