Death of Hadiya and the end of the Despot War

25,805 BBYExact dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

At the walls of Kaleth, Lok tried to stab the sleeping Hadiya but hesitated, and when the queen attacked him he struck her down, causing the Despot Army to collapse and ending the war.

Description

Daegen Lok was a human from the Tython system, a student of Master Quan-Jang of the Anil Kesh temple of science, and rose to the rank of Je'daii Ranger. Infiltrating the Despot Army was proposed to him by Volnos Ryo of the Ryo clan, who wished to avenge himself on Hadiya for the execution of his father and elder brother. Posing as a disgraced Ranger, Lok rose to general and became the queen's lover, and the line between pretense and genuine feeling gradually blurred until Volnos Ryo reminded him of his mission. Killing by stealth was forbidden by the Je'daii code, and this, together with his attachment to Hadiya, made Lok hesitate: the dagger thrust through a gap in her armor was not fatal. The queen managed to slash his face across the right eye, after which Lok took up his sword and killed her, and then fought his way out of the command camp, leaving only one survivor. Without Hadiya, her generals began fighting among themselves for power, and the order soon defeated the remnants of the Despot Army. Losses amounted to about one hundred thousand killed among the inhabitants of Tython and more than a million in the Despot Army; tension in the system persisted for another decade.
