Death of Senator Fang Zar on Alderaan

Fang Zar, senator for Sern Prime and its sector, was among the signatories of the Petition of the 2,000 — an appeal by senators concerned about the concentration of power in the hands of the Supreme Chancellor. The day after the proclamation of the Empire, Imperial Intelligence carried out mass arrests of members of the delegation, and Zar found himself among those wanted, accused of conspiracy and treason. After hiding with sympathizers, the senator was forced to flee Coruscant. The crew of a smuggling ship, which included Roan Shryne, a Jedi who had abandoned his former path, undertook to take him to his home planet; the transfer was arranged through Alderaan, where local patrons received the fugitives. The Emperor charged Darth Vader with capturing the senator, and the Dark Lord caught up with them before the ship could get away. Fang Zar was killed, and the ship's captain, Jula Shryne, was wounded by a thrown lightsaber. The senator's death showed that Imperial persecution did not stop at the borders of worlds friendly to the Republic, and for Roan Shryne it became proof that the enemy was truly a Sith, which predetermined his subsequent decisions.
