Description
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is a novel by Alan Dean Foster, first published by Del Rey on February 12, 1978. The book was originally released with a subtitle identifying it as further adventures of Luke Skywalker. The work belongs to Star Wars Legends and is considered the very first work of the Expanded Universe: it appeared less than a year after the release of the first film.
The book was conceived as a sequel to the film A New Hope, whose novelization Foster also wrote. The story takes place shortly after the Battle of Yavin and focuses on Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, who find themselves on the fog-shrouded swamp planet Mimban, where the Empire is conducting mining operations. The plot revolves around the search for an artifact that amplifies one's connection to the Force.
The novel is notable for having been written before the later films of the saga appeared, so many of its details differ from the way the galaxy was depicted afterward. Nevertheless, the book began the tradition of literary continuations of Star Wars that dozens of authors subsequently took up.
