Description
Haruun Kal is a planet in the system of the same name, located in the Dustig sector of the Mid Rim, in grid square M-17 of the standard galactic grid. The world is known above all as the homeworld of Jedi Master Mace Windu.
The planet's landscape is formed by mountains, lakes, and gas swamps in the south. Lake Haruuni lies so high in the mountains that the fish there, as the local saying goes, all but jump out of the water by themselves. Among the vegetation, the lammas tree stands out. The planet's capital was the city of Pelek Baw; the native population consisted of humans and Korunnai. Every child on Haruun Kal was given a vaccination that left a characteristic round scar on the upper chest, and by it natives of the planet recognized one another beyond its borders.
Legends say that Haruun Kal was originally settled by shipwrecked Jedi: a single crashed ship gave rise to life that spread across the entire planet. During the Clone Wars, the planet became the scene of a battle between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems: the Separatist forces were commanded by General Grievous, and the Republic forces by Jedi General Depa Billaba.
Later, because of the unresolved legacy of the Clone Wars, an Imperial military force was sent to Haruun Kal to suppress an uprising. The campaign ended with an orbital bombardment under the Base Gamma-1 protocol; the forests burned to the ground, yet by 34 ABY new shoots of lammas trees were already breaking through on the planet.
