Palpatine elected Chancellor

c. 32 BBYApproximate dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

A change of chancellor amid the crisis brought to the summit of power a senator who was secretly controlling both sides.

Description

By the time of the blockade of Naboo, the Galactic Senate was already considered slow and prone to endless procedural disputes. Queen Amidala's appeal to the senators produced no result: instead of help, it was proposed to appoint a commission to investigate the circumstances of the invasion, while Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum was accused of being powerless against bureaucracy and corruption. On the advice of Naboo's senator, Sheev Palpatine, the queen moved a vote of no confidence in the sitting chancellor. The motion, coming from the ruler of a suffering planet, received broad support, Valorum was removed, and an election campaign began. Palpatine put himself forward, relying on sympathy for Naboo and on his reputation as a man who had suffered from the crisis. He was elected Supreme Chancellor. Both sides of the conflict that brought him to power were secretly directed by him, and the office he obtained became the foundation for the subsequent expansion of his powers. It was from this post that, a decade and a half later, the emergency wartime powers and the proclamation of the Empire grew.
