Race on Tatooine

The Boonta Eve Classic was considered the largest annual podrace in the galaxy and the main cultural event on Tatooine. It was held by a Hutt clan in honor of the Boonta Eve holiday; the course ran in a circuit around Mos Espa, with the start and finish at the Grand Arena. The death rate in this race was the highest of any such competition. The race, held thirty-two years before the Battle of Yavin, was presided over by Jabba Desilijic Tiure, and the competition was filmed by flying camera droids. Of the eighteen pilots who started, only six reached the finish; the racer Ratts Tyerell was killed in a head-on collision in the Laguna Caves on the first lap, and on top of that Tusken Raiders fired on the participants. Victory, with a time of fifteen minutes and forty-two seconds, went to the slave boy Anakin Skywalker. The win brought him freedom and the opportunity to leave Tatooine with the Jedi. In the years that followed, Jabba shortened the distance to two laps and added new obstacles to the course, increasing the profitability of the spectacle.
