Trade Federation landing on Naboo

Having made sure that the Senate would not intervene quickly, the Trade Federation moved from blockade to conquest. Landing craft carrying battle droids were dropped from the battleships to the surface; the droids occupied the capital, Theed, disarmed the palace guard, and took Queen Padmé Amidala and members of the government into custody. The planet, which had almost no army, was unable to put up resistance. The population was herded into camps, and communications were jammed so that news of what was happening would not reach the Republic, while Gunray pressed the queen to sign a treaty that would give the occupation a veneer of legality. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had landed together with the invasion force, freed Amidala and took her off the planet through the blockade. The droids were controlled centrally, from a control ship in orbit, a feature that later determined the outcome of the entire campaign. The seizure of Naboo was the first case of a trade corporation openly sending troops into a Republic world, and it showed how defenseless worlds that relied on treaties and the Senate's mediation really were.
