Evacuation of Echo Base

Echo Base got its name from its unusual acoustics and was carved into a glacier of the Clabburn Range: the Alliance engineering corps spent eighteen months on construction and another two on installing equipment, connecting natural caves with artificial corridors. The defenses were supplemented by ground gun emplacements and an ion cannon capable of firing at ships in orbit. The alarm was raised after Han Solo and Chewbacca discovered an Imperial probe that had managed to transmit data before self-destructing. General Carlist Rieekan concluded that the probe was Imperial and immediately put plan K-one-zero into effect: the shields were raised to full power, and the transports began to be withdrawn one by one, each covered by fire from the ion cannon, while ground units held off the walkers. The orderly nature of the withdrawal made it possible to preserve personnel and the main forces, although some people remained on the planet and were evacuated only several months later. The base itself fell to the Empire, and the scattered Alliance fleet regrouped in other regions of the galaxy.
