Battle of Hoth

After the victory at Yavin, the Alliance abandoned Yavin 4 and spent several years searching for a new stronghold, retreating under the Empire's relentless attacks. Hoth made the list of suitable planets based on reconnaissance, and the engineering corps spent about two years building a base there; it had been occupied for less than a month before the battle. The Empire dispatched probe droids across the galaxy, and one of them, launched from the Star Destroyer Stalker, discovered the target. The offensive was led by Darth Vader, and its objectives were the destruction of the base and the capture of Luke Skywalker. The planetary shield prevented an orbital bombardment, so General Maximilian Veers was ordered to mount a ground assault with walkers. The defense of the shield generator was led by Rogue Squadron in snowspeeders, which brought down the machines with tow cables. The generator was destroyed by Veers's lead walker, and the 501st Legion, led by Vader, entered the base. The battle is considered the Alliance's heaviest field defeat of the entire war: the rebel fleet scattered across the galaxy, and until the turning point at Endor the war was reduced to scattered skirmishes.
