Blockade of Naboo
The Trade Federation cut off access to Naboo, forcing the Republic to seek a political solution.
Description
The pretext for the Trade Federation's actions was the taxation of free trade routes, which cut into its profits. Viceroy Nute Gunray brought battleships to Naboo and sealed off every approach to the planet, cutting off its supplies. Formally the dispute remained a commercial one, and the Senate found itself bound by procedure: the debate bogged down in committees, while the Federation denied that a blockade even existed. Supreme Chancellor Valorum secretly sent two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, to negotiate, hoping to settle the matter without publicity. Their arrival was not acknowledged: aboard the Federation flagship they were not even allowed to begin negotiations. Meanwhile, the young Queen Padmé Amidala refused to sign the treaty being forced on her, which would have given the occupation a veneer of legality. The political outcome proved the opposite of what had been expected. Having reached Coruscant, Amidala became convinced that the Senate would not help and moved a vote of no confidence in Valorum. His removal opened the way for the election of Naboo's senator, Palpatine, as Supreme Chancellor, while the planet itself was left to deal with the invasion on its own.
