Retreat from D'Qar
Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.
The Resistance base was discovered, and escaping the strike cost the fleet nearly all of its bombers.
Description
By destroying Starkiller Base, the Resistance gave away its own location: the reconnaissance flight to the superweapon allowed the First Order to trace a starfighter to the Ileenium system. Fearing a retaliatory strike, General Leia Organa ordered the base on D'Qar evacuated in haste, using every shuttle and taking out only what was necessary. The enemy fleet arrived before the evacuation was complete. General Armitage Hux assigned the destruction of the base to the siege dreadnought Fulminatrix under the command of Imperial veteran Captain Moden Canady: the ship blanketed the ground structures with orbital autocannons, but there were no longer any people there. Covering the withdrawal, Poe Dameron single-handedly knocked out the dreadnought's anti-aircraft batteries, after which heavy bombers went on the attack. The dreadnought launched starfighters and destroyed almost the entire formation; the last surviving bomber nevertheless dropped its payload and destroyed the ship along with its crew.
