Construction of the Imperial battle station

19 BBY–0 ABYDate rangeLast checked: 23 October 2026

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

The Empire builds an enormous battle station; the work spans nearly the entire period between the fall of the Republic and the station's first use.

Description

The concept of a battle station with a superlaser arose as early as the Clone Wars: the plans were developed in the design bureaus of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and later passed to the regime. Having proclaimed the Empire, Palpatine turned the project into his main instrument of intimidation and entrusted its oversight to Wilhuff Tarkin, and its scientific side to researchers of kyber crystals. The work went on for almost two decades and required colossal resources: mines and entire systems were converted to the extraction of raw materials, the forced labor of prisoners and subjugated peoples was used in construction, and information about the station was kept in the strictest secrecy. The greatest difficulties were caused by the superlaser: assembly of the focusing system dragged on, and kyber crystals were seized from holy sites such as Jedha. The station was completed by the end of this period and became known as the “Death Star.” Its appearance marked the Empire's abandonment of its former reliance on the bureaucracy and the senate in favor of the direct threat of destroying planets. A leak of information and the delivery of the plans to the rebels led to the station's first combat use ending in its destruction.
