Founding of the Jedi Order

The Jedi Order took shape as a monastic but nontheistic community united by service to the light side of the Force. According to surviving accounts, the order was originally founded on the planet Ahch-To in the Unknown Regions, and only much later did the Great Jedi Temple on Coruscant become the center of all its activity. The order's internal structure did not take form all at once. The Temple in the capital served as both a sanctuary and a school: younglings and Padawans trained there under the supervision of Jedi Masters. Twelve Masters were elected to the High Council, the order's supreme governing body. The council's officers were the Grand Master, regarded as the head of the order and the wisest of the Masters, and the Master of the Order, who directed the work of the council itself. The life of the order was defined by the Jedi Code: every member of the community was obliged to observe and uphold it on pain of expulsion. Jedi served as mediators in disputes, warriors, teachers, and researchers, and in the Galactic Republic they were known above all as guardians of peace and justice.
