Election of Cal Omas and restoration of the Jedi Council
A struggle for the post of Chief of State unfolded on Mon Calamari. Mara Jade foiled an assassination attempt on Cal Omas by Vong agents, and Lando Calrissian and Talon Karrde won the senators over to his side. Having won, Omas reconciled the military with the Senate and recreated the High Council, half of it made up of Jedi.
Description
After Borsk Fey'lya's death, the remnants of the government gathered on Mon Calamari, and the election of a Chief of State promised to be contentious for the first time in years. The Alderaan native Cal Omas, who had served under Ackbar during the Alliance's war years and was known for his support of the Jedi, faced Fyor Rodan of Commenor, who proposed ending the war without the Jedi and cutting their funding. Also running were Kurs Quis of Ryloth and Ta'laam Ranth of Antar 4. In the first round, Omas trailed. He gained the edge thanks to Quis withdrawing in his favor, the influence of Talon Karrde and Lando Calrissian, and the post of Minister of Justice offered to Ranth; in the end, eighty-five percent of the senators backed him. An assassination attempt on the candidate by Vong agents was thwarted by Mara Jade Skywalker. Together with Luke Skywalker, the new Chief of State established a High Council of six Jedi and six secular members. The council's first major issue was the fate of the Alpha Red virus: Omas promised not to use it except in extremity.
