Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

An attack on the Republic's capital and the rescue of the Supreme Chancellor from captivity.

Description

By the third year of the war both sides were exhausted, and the Confederacy decided to strike at the most heavily defended place of all: the capital of the Republic. A fleet under the command of General Grievous broke into the system and engaged in battle directly above the city-planet; wreckage from ships fell onto the upper levels. The main objective was not conquest but the abduction of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was taken aboard the flagship Invisible Hand. The task of recovering the chancellor was given to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, recalled from the front. They fought their way aboard, where they confronted Count Dooku; Kenobi was incapacitated, and Skywalker defeated and killed the Sith at Palpatine's urging. Grievous managed to leave the doomed ship and escape, abandoning his fleet. Skywalker landed the crippled flagship, which had lost half its hull, at the capital's spaceport. The Republic declared victory, but the war did not end: Grievous went into hiding on Utapau, and Palpatine used the attack as an argument for further expanding his powers and the assignments carried out beyond the Senate's control.
