Kessel Run in twelve parsecs

Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.

Because of the instability of the unrefined coaxium, Han flies the Millennium Falcon straight through the Akkadese Maelstrom, evading Imperial fighters and the summa-verminoth monster. The navigational data of the destroyed L3-37 is transferred into the ship's systems, which helps find a way out of the Maw's gravity well. After landing on Savareen, Han declares that he made the Kessel Run in just twelve parsecs, rounding in his own favor.

Description

The unrefined coaxium taken from the mines of Kessel decomposed at the slightest heating, and only a few hours remained before it had to be processed. The usual route was too long, so Han Solo took the Millennium Falcon straight through the Akkadese Maelstrom — a region of debris clusters, gravitational disturbances, and currents that all trade routes avoided. Evading Imperial pursuit and a predatory creature that lived in the depths of the maelstrom, the ship moved off the established routes; part of the cargo had to be sacrificed to break free of a gravitational pull. To shorten the distance, Solo approached what navigators avoided, and in the end covered a route that usually came to about twenty parsecs in a significantly shorter distance. The cargo was delivered for processing in time. Solo was fond of citing the distance covered, later given as twelve parsecs, as proof of his ship's speed, although it was a matter not of time but of the length of the route. The Kessel Run cemented the Millennium Falcon's reputation as one of the fastest ships in the galaxy.
