Beginning of the Mandalorian Wars

The Mandalorian Wars was the name given to sixteen years of conflict between the Mandalorians and the Galactic Republic, the start of which is dated to 3,976 BBY and the Battle of Althir. The conflict flared up two decades after the Great Sith War. Raids on Outer Rim systems went on for more than ten years before direct confrontation with Republic forces began in 3,965 BBY. The Mandalorians were led by Mandalore the Ultimate: the previous leader, Mandalore the Indomitable, had died on Dxun in the last days of the Sith War, and the leader's mask was found by a warrior of the Taung people. Relying on the Neo-Crusader movement, created with the help of his aide Cassus Fett, Mandalore the Ultimate subjugated systems along the eastern edge of the galaxy. Among the consequences of these campaigns was the near-total extermination of the Cathar people, yet only strikes on worlds near Taris drew the Republic's attention. After a year of minor skirmishes known as the Phony War, the Mandalorians broke through the defenses and in 3,963 BBY besieged Taris, and then invaded Republic space along three axes at once; this offensive became known as the Onslaught.
