Ghorman Massacre
Warning: this entry reveals minor plot details.
Imperial forces gunned down a peaceful demonstration, pushing senators toward an open break with the regime.
Description
The massacre on Ghorman was part of the escalating campaign of repression that the Empire waged against centers of resistance. A demonstration by the townspeople was dispersed by the Imperial Army, which opened fire on the unarmed crowd: according to Imperial archives, hundreds, if not thousands, of participants were killed. The event received various names, the Ghorman Massacre, the slaughter on Ghorman, the Imperial murder of Ghorman, and became a turning point of the Imperial Era. It convinced many rebel sympathizers that peaceful opposition to the regime was no longer possible, thereby hastening the transition to open war. The direct consequence was Senator Mon Mothma's speech in the Imperial Senate, in which what had happened was called genocide and the blame was placed on the emperor himself. The historian Beaumont Kin later assessed the massacre as a serious miscalculation by Imperial officials that mobilized the regime's opponents. The Ghorman Memorial for the Missing was established in memory of the victims.
