Chewbacca's life debt to Han Solo

c. 5 BBYApproximate dateLast checked: 23 October 2026

A smuggler discharged from Imperial service runs into a Wookiee whom he saved from slavers and who now considers himself bound by a life debt. On Nar Shaddaa, the partners find work with a smuggler pilot and then enter the service of the Hutts Jabba and Jiliac.

Description

Han Solo, having entered the Imperial flight academy and served with distinction for some time, was discharged from the service for stopping an Imperial officer from beating with a neural whip a shackled Wookiee who had refused to submit upon capture. This Wookiee, Chewbacca, had been captured by slavers operating with the connivance of the Imperial authorities. The freed Chewbacca, following the custom of his people, declared a life debt to his rescuer — an obligation that Wookiees take on voluntarily and consider unbreakable. It meant that he would protect Solo even at the cost of his own life and follow him wherever he went. Solo, having lost his career and been forced to return to smuggling, accepted his companion reluctantly but soon came to rely on him. From this obligation grew a long friendship and business partnership. Together they flew the Millennium Falcon and gained renown as some of the most successful smugglers, and the life debt that had marked the beginning of their alliance eventually ceased to matter compared to their personal attachment.

    • Han meets Chewbacca10 BBYThis event is an alternate versionTwo versions of how Han Solo met Chewbacca and earned his life debt. In Legends (around 5 BBY), Han is an officer in the Imperial Navy: he stands up for an enslaved Wookiee, for which he is court-martialed and discharged from the service, and the rescued Chewbacca declares a life debt to him. In canon (10 BBY), Private Han is thrown into a pit with the enslaved Chewbacca for attempting to desert; they escape together, and the life debt arises from the escape. The date, Han's rank, the place, and the circumstances differ: the rescue of a slave versus a joint escape.
